The palace was built by the Poonjar Rajas, a local royal family, in the 18th century. It is known for its exquisite architecture, which is a blend of traditional Kerala and Dutch styles.

The palace has a number of rooms that are beautifully decorated with antique furniture, chandeliers, and murals. One of the main attractions of the palace is the Chuttuvilakku (row of lamps) display, which consists of thousands of oil lamps that are lit during special occasions.
