Monroe Lighthouse Kottayam

In the 19th and 20th century the Munroe lighthouse served as a major landmark and guide to all the boats from Alappuzha and Ernakulam which used to sail to Kottayam for different trading purposes.

This forgotten lighthouse in Kottayam lies at the point where the Kodoor river and Meenachil river meets and merges into the Vembanad lake.

Kottayam lighthouse - Pallom Lighthouse - Munro lighthouse - Monroe lighthouse was built in 1813 by Col. Munroe on the banks of Vembanad Lake. The 200 year old lighthouse is still in good condition and attracting many tourists. The beauty of Pallam backwaters adds to the beauty.

Earlier, this 35 foot lighthouse was lit using kerosene and a lens besides it used to illuminate a large area. The government also had an appointed person to light the lamp.

Instead of being treasured, this piece of Travancore history was neglected and unnoticed by the Government. IWAI(Inland Waterways Authority of India) have already started their process to take care of the lighthouse.

It’s been around 30 years since the Munro Lighthouse has closed its eyes. After the successful restoration, this historical establishment could be one of the best tourist attractions in Kottayam.
